A nearby HOA is reporting that Avian Flu is killing off their resident geese; 12-15 geese and a few ducks were found dead. A resident contacted IDNR and a Wildlife Biologist with them tested samples and confirmed the deaths are due to Avian Influenza, which have been affecting wild bird populations across Illinois and beyond. The virus poses little direct risk to humans but that is not the case for other animals, like pets.

IDNR would like to make public some important information regarding taking simple precautions in case someone find dead geese, ducks or other birds on your properties.

  • DO NOT touch or handle dead geese or other wild birds with bare hands. WEAR GLOVES!
  • Keep pets away from carcasses and areas with goose droppings.
  • If you find a dead goose: wear gloves, double-bag the carcass, and place it in your garbage bin. Please, note that there is no agency available to collect them–it is the responsibility of the property owner.
  • If you find any dead geese, please let the Board know. We will in turn report the findings to keep a record of how goose populations will be affected.
