We want to share an important update regarding avian influenza (“bird flu”) that has recently impacted the goose population of an HOA near us. Trails at Brittany HOA has reported that 12–15 geese and several ducks were found dead. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) confirmed through testing that these deaths were caused by avian influenza, which has been affecting wild bird populations across Illinois and beyond.
Since Canada Geese travel among many local lakes, it is possible the goose population on our lakes will be exposed.
The virus poses little direct risk to people, however pets could be at risk.
An IDNR wildlife biologist provided the following precautions to keep yourself and your pets safe and what to do if you find a dead goose or duck:
- Do not touch or handle dead geese or other wild birds.
- Keep pets away from bird carcasses and areas with goose droppings.
- If you find a dead goose or duck:
- If it’s on your property, wear gloves, double-bag the carcass, and place it in your garbage bin for collection.
- There is no state or county service available to collect dead birds. Property owners are responsible for proper disposal.
- If it’s on an HOA commons area, disposal is our shared responsiblity. Please let us know if you are able to help us dispose of any dead geese on our commons areas.
- Leaving the carcass for natural scavengers (turkey vultures), is not recommended because other animals (dogs, cats, foxes) can become infected and spread the virus further. While not a high threat to humans, avian influenza is highly contagious among animals.
- Please report the number and location of any dead geese or ducks you find via the website Contact Form link below. We will report this information to Friends of Geese and IDNR who are tracking the extent and spread of this outbreak. Thank you.
